The Mars craft would be assembled in Earth orbit, the components being launched aboard a rocket with reusable boosters. Ten launches would be required to place 3850 tons of fuel in orbit for the journey to and from Mars. The assembled spacecraft would have a truncated-cone shape, 24 meters in diameter at the base, surrounded by eight liquid hydrogen fuel tanks, with liquid oxygen in the central element. It would propel the Mars vehicle, weighing 195 tons, into satellite orbit around Mars. The Mars vehicle itself has three modules: a toroidal (donut-shaped) command module with compartments providing living and working space for six men for a period of 830 days; an exploration lander; and a module designed for reentry into the Earth's atmosphere.
